Is It Difficult To Learn To Play The Piano?

I Want To Learn How To Play The Piano.

I'm sure everyone has thought about learning to do something new and different from time to time. If learning to play the piano has ever crossed your mind you might think a few things, like.... "how hard would it be for me to learn to play the piano?" or "I wonder how long it will take me to become great at the piano?". Also like many things, you were probably inspired by watching someone playing the piano who had a lot of experience and made it look very impressive and easy at the same time.

Unfortunately there is no way to say how long it will take someone to learn to play the piano or how difficult a task it will be for a student. Some students pick up really quick and advance quickly through all their technique and music, others it is challenging for them to make their hands and fingers do what their head knows they need to do. Don't worry though, the more you practice the better you will get. The only way to fail is to give up or to never even try in the first place.

Why Do Some People Learn To Play The Piano Faster Than Other People?

There are many reasons why some students are able to learn to play the piano faster than other students. One of the biggest reasons are, students who practice on a regular basis will retain more of what they are learning and their hands will be able to move quicker and more accurately on the piano keys. Students who practice also develop their sight reading skills which is extremely important if you are wanting to excel at a rapid pace and become an advanced pianist.

I do have some students who don't practice like they should and still are able to play the piano very well. They will never be as technical as they should be, like they would be with practice, but it is true that playing the piano just clicks with some people.

Another reason why some people learn quickly is just from the pure fact that they have a passion for learning to play the piano. So when they are learning something that is difficult it doesn't feel like work to them and so they don't consider it "hard".

But the BIGGEST reason that someone will be able to learn to play the piano quickly will be from practicing.

Learning To Play The Piano Is For Everyone.

I've been teaching piano lessons in Arizona for over 20 years. One of my greatest joys is being able to share the gift of playing the piano with all my students and help them become great at playing the piano. One of the questions I get a lot is, "Is it harder for an adult to learn to play the piano than a child?", the answer will always be no. Children have the advantage for two reasons. They do not have the responsibilities of an adult so they have more time to practice, and they have parents who will hopefully keep them accountable on their practicing.

What Age Is The Easiest To Learn To Play The Piano?

There is no magic age. If a child starts young it is just a part of like but they move slower than an older child who is able to retain more information at one lesson. However, for private piano lessons I do recommend waiting until a child is about 4 years old. So that they can sit through a 30min lesson without it being torture. Adults who decide to learn to play the piano is awesome too, since it is something you want to do, not a parent making you practice, my adult piano students tend to progress extremely fast with our piano courses for adults in Mesa, Az.
